UK Extends Methanol Poisoning Alert Roster with 11 Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven more nations to its travel warning register regarding the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated beverages.
The updated advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just recently, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, following multiple serious cases including the tragic loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
What is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Methanol is a poisonous substance often employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Authorities' Guidance for Tourists
Foreign Office minister the minister said that all travellers should know the indicators of methanol toxicity.
"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for well-known venues and avoid homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer advised.
"In case something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's way worse than typical or vision problems – get medical help fast."
The complete list of countries identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
